Paulson Cabin

Norskedalen has been built by volunteers over the past 40 years who believe that remembering their heritage is the best way to pave the road to the future. Since Norskedalen is not about me, but about those who built it and those who will keep it growing, what I share with you here is reflective of Norskedalen and it’s members.

Buildings were moved to Norskedalen from a variety of surrounding farms. Each of the buildings were lived in and/or used within 10 miles of where they now stand. The Homestead is built in traditional Norwegian style of a ‘tun’, or U shape. A tobacco barn resides at the top of the hill behind the homestead, reflecting the significance of the tobacco farms in this area. All of this work was done by volunteers on weekends and evenings, with no paid staff, no budget, no funding. Just the belief that preserving the history of this area is important for the future. Tremendous friendships have been built during the building of Norskedalen!

The Paulson Cabin was built in the 1840’s. The kitchen and basement were added to make it modern, but otherwise what you see in the living room and upper level is what the Paulson family lived in.
